About

Since 1957, Skyline Christian Youth Camp (SCYC) has been shaping the hearts and lives of young people across Northeast Alabama and Northwest Georgia.

Our staff, counselors, teachers, and volunteers are all members of the church of Christ who generously give their time to serve. Their goal is simple: create a safe, joyful environment where campers can have fun, build friendships, and grow in their understanding of God’s Word.

At SCYC, every activity, lesson, and moment is designed to help guide young people in their faith as they navigate the challenges of youth.

Mission Statement

It is the mission of Skyline Christian Youth Camp to provide activities to enhance the development of young people intellectually, physically, socially, spiritually, and as good citizens of the United States of America; without discrimination as to race, ethnic background, religious teaching, or sex. It is our purpose to provide all young people, who desire to attend camp, an opportunity to be a part of the wholesome activities of the camp even if they cannot afford the tuition.

History

Skyline Christian Youth Camp—affectionately known as SCYC—began in 1957 when a group of Christian men in Northeast Alabama set out to create a summer camp where young people could enjoy meaningful activities while learning the principles of Scripture.

Originally called Alabama Christian Youth Camp (ACYC), the first session was held at Skyline Ranch for Girls in Mentone, Alabama. In 1960, Brother William (Bill) Kughn became the first director, serving faithfully through 1969. During 1968 and 1969, camp sessions were held at Camp Ney‑A‑Ti in Guntersville. Although no session was held in 1970, Travis Conner stepped in as director in 1971, and camp returned to Skyline Ranch that same year.

A new Board of Directors was formed in 1972, and with it came a new name: Skyline Christian Youth Camp.

Camp Locations Through the Years

SCYC remained at Skyline Ranch until 1998.

  • 1999–2000: Riverview Camp in Mentone
  • 2001–2008: Camp Sumatanga’s Lodge in Gallant, Alabama — complete with dorm‑style rooms, cafeteria dining, indoor meeting spaces, and yes…air conditioning. Many fondly remember these years as “sissy camp.”
  • 2009: SCYC moved to Sumatanga’s Pool Camp, returning to a more rustic, cabin‑style experience reminiscent of the early days at Skyline Ranch.

Leadership Legacy

Travis Conner served as director for an incredible 41 years, with 2012 marking his final session. In 2013, Kevin Smith became only the third director in SCYC’s history.

In the summer of 2017, SCYC returned once again to Camp Ney‑A‑Ti in Guntersville, Alabama—bringing the story full circle.

A Tradition That Endures

Through every move, every director, and every generation of campers, one thing has remained unchanged: “Everybody, everybody, everybody likes it… SCYC camp!”

Board of Directors

SCYC has a board of directors made of seven faithful Christians seeking to fulfill the mission of SCYC while living a life to the glory of God.
