About

Skyline Christian Youth Camp (SCYC) has been helping to mold the lives of young people in Northeast Alabama and Northwest Georgia since 1957. All staff, counselors, volunteers and teachers are members of the church of Christ and they volunteer and dedicate their time to making sure that the campers have fun while also learning Biblical principles that will help to guide them in their youth.

Mission Statement

It is the mission of Skyline Christian Youth Camp to provide activities to enhance the development of young people intellectually, physically, socially, spiritually, and as good citizens of the United States of America; without discrimination as to race, ethnic background, religious teaching, or sex. It is our purpose to provide all young people, who desire to attend camp, an opportunity to be a part of the wholesome activities of the camp even if they cannot afford the tuition.

History

Skyline Christian Youth Camp, or SCYC, as it is most often referred to, had its beginning in 1957 when a group of men in Northeast Alabama came together to establish a summer camp for young people that provided activities and opportunities for teaching Christian principles as set forth in the Bible.

The original name was Alabama Christian Youth Camp (ACYC) and the first session was held at Skyline Ranch for Girls in Mentone, Alabama. Brother William (Bill) Kughn was named the first director in 1960 and he served in that capacity through 1969. Camp sessions were held at Camp Ney-A-Ti in Guntersville, Alabama in 1968 and 1969. There was no camp session in 1970 but Travis Conner was named director in 1971 and it was that year that camp returned to Skyline Ranch. A new Board of Directors was organized in 1972 and it was then that a new corporation was formed, with a new name; SKYLINE CHRISTIAN YOUTH CAMP.

SCYC remained at Skyline Ranch through 1998. Riverview Camp in Mentone, Alabama was the home for SCYC in 1999 and 2000 and in 2001 SCYC began meeting at Camp Sumatanga in Gallant, Alabama. From 2001 through 2008 we used Camp Sumatanga’s Lodge with dormitory style rooms, cafeteria style dining and indoor meeting facilities – all with air conditioning!! We now refer to these few years as “sissy camp”. In 2009 we moved to Sumatanga’s Pool Camp which brought back the feel of our days at Camp Skyline with the individual cabins and a more rustic touch.

Travis Conner served as director for 41 years with 2012 being his final camp session as director and in 2013 Kevin Smith became only the third director of Skyline Christian Youth Camp. SCYC moved again in the summer of 2017 back to Camp Ney-Ya-Ti in Guntersville, AL.

No matter where camp has been held or who has served as director or counselors, the old saying still holds true today: “Everybody, Everybody, Everybody likes it…SCYC camp!”
