SCYC Board Members

Since 1957, Skyline Christian Youth Camp (SCYC) has been shaping the hearts and lives of young people across Northeast Alabama and Northwest Georgia.

Our staff, counselors, teachers, and volunteers are all members of the church of Christ who generously give their time to serve. Their goal is simple: create a safe, joyful environment where campers can have fun, build friendships, and grow in their understanding of God’s Word.

At SCYC, every activity, lesson, and moment is designed to help guide young people in their faith as they navigate the challenges of youth.

Tom Baxley
Centre, AL
Minister, Hwy 9 church of Christ

My first experience with SCYC was in June of 2010 when I became the minister for the Hwy 9 church in Piedmont. Since that time, I have only missed a few years of camp and have been a member of the board for about 10 years.

My wife, Shea, and I have three children. I am still preaching at Hwy 9 but have recently moved into education I recently graduated from the University of West Alabama with a master’s degree in history education and will hopefully soon have a full-time teaching position.

Camp has always been a big part of my life. I grew up in Florida and went to Gulf Coast Bible Camp, Teen Week, for many years as both camper and counselor, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a counselor for SCYC, especially now that my children are camping with me.

David Bradford, Ed.D.
Pell City, Alabama
Oneonta Church of Christ

I have been affiliated with Skyline Christian Youth Camp since the mid-1990s, when camp was located in Mentone, Alabama, and I currently serve as a member of the Board. SCYC is vitally important to me because it provides a meaningful opportunity to positively influence young people both physically and spiritually, helping strengthen their faith and character.

I am retired after a 34-year career in education, where I served as a math and computer science teacher, basketball coach, and administrator. My wife, Karen, and I have been married since 1981, and we have one daughter, Mandi Courington, and two grandchildren, Hallie Kate and Ford, who bring great joy to our lives. I earned degrees from Gadsden State, The University of Alabama, Jacksonville State University, and later returned to The University of Alabama to earn my Doctor of Education degree in 1996. I continue to serve as an elder at the Oneonta Church of Christ and teach an adult Bible class.

SCYC has had a tremendous impact on many young people over the years, including my own family, as my daughter was a camper. I am grateful to be part of an organization that helps shape the faith of future generations and provides an environment where young people can grow closer to Christ.

My wife, Carrie, and I have three children, all of whom have attended SCYC through the years. I am also a graduate of Freed‑Hardeman University. I am grateful for the chance to support the mission and impact of Skyline Christian Youth Camp.

I am retired from Alabama Gas Corporation and currently serve as a deacon at the Henderson Church of Christ, where I work with the Young Marrieds and University Ministry. I first attended Skyline Christian Youth Camp (then ACYC) as a camper in 1967 and 1968, and I have been affiliated with camp ever since. My father also served on the Board in the late 1960s, and I have had the privilege of serving as a counselor since 1986 and as a member of the Board of Directors since 1995. SCYC has been a constant and meaningful part of my life, and it has been a blessing to serve and watch its continued impact across generations.

I am retired from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Division, where I served as a Sergeant and held various leadership roles, including assistant region supervisor, boating safety coordinator, hunter safety coordinator and instructor, and equipment manager. I am a graduate of Auburn University with a degree in Zoology (Wildlife Biology) and am a certified Hunter Safety Instructor and lifetime member of the NRA. In my second career, I served as a freelance flight instructor and hold certifications as a Commercial Pilot, Instrument Instructor, and Multi-Engine Instructor.

My wife, Denise, has served as both a counselor and camp nurse, and both of our daughters attended SCYC as campers, with our youngest also now serving as a counselor. Today, all three of our granddaughters attend camp. SCYC has brought tremendous joy and spiritual growth to my family, and it has been one of the greatest blessings of my life to be part of its mission and legacy.

Hartselle Church of Christ, Hartselle, AL.

I have been affiliated with SCYC since 1989, when I was born! I do not remember when I first came to camp officially as I would come with my parents well before camping age. I have been on the board since 2014 and currently serve as Board President.

I lead the Smith family of 5 in Hartselle, AL. Savannah is my wonderful wife, and we have 3 fantastic kids. I’ve been in ministry since 2012 and I’ve been a minister at the Hartselle Church of Christ since 2021; we love our church family! Camp is always one of my favorite weeks of the year.

I met Savannah through SCYC, so it means a great deal to my entire family. I know first-hand the kind of spiritual growth that can happen through SCYC. Some of the greatest influences on my life and faith came through SCYC, especially counselors and leaders like Travis Conner, Dale Harris, Bobby Thomas, Donnie Abercrombie, and most of all, my dad, Kevin Smith. Their example and investment helped shape who I am today. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve SCYC and help ensure that future generations experience that same encouragement, growth, and spiritual foundation.

Glencoe, Alabama
Gadsden Church of Christ

I have been affiliated with Skyline Christian Youth Camp for more than 55 years—first as a camper and later as a counselor and staff member. I have served on the SCYC Board since 1985 and have been the Camp Director since 2013.

My wife, Jan, and I have three sons, three daughters-in-law, and nine grandchildren. I spent 32 years with State Farm Insurance as a Claim Representative and currently work as a case manager for Attorney Clark Hall in Gadsden. I have also been a bi-vocational preacher for 36 years and currently serve as a minister and shepherd for the Gadsden Church of Christ.

SCYC has been an important part of my life for over half a century. I grew up attending camp, raised my children there, and now watch my grandchildren do the same. Camp is truly a family affair for me, and I am grateful for my long-standing affiliation with SCYC and the lasting impact it has had on so many lives.

Mark Smith
Arab, Alabama
Eva Church of Christ

I have been affiliated with Skyline Christian Youth Camp for about 23 years, beginning as a counselor when my oldest daughter first attended as a camper. I have served on the SCYC Board of Directors for many years, including serving as Board President. SCYC has been an important part of my family’s life, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help continue its mission and influence.

My wife, Jill, and I were married the day after I graduated from Auburn University with a degree in electrical engineering in 1990. We have three children—Nicole, Hannah, and Isaac—and two grandchildren, Ezra and Ranger. I have worked as an energy and utilities engineer for the United States Army since 1991. My family worships at the Eva Church of Christ in Eva, Alabama.

SCYC is meaningful to me because of the lasting spiritual impact it has had on so many young people, including my own family. The time spent at camp reflects the fellowship, unity, and spiritual focus that characterized the early church. Some of my most cherished memories are having my entire family at camp together, and I now look forward to sharing that same experience with my grandchildren.

Craig Womack
Ringgold, Georgia
Rossville Church of Christ

I have been affiliated with Skyline Christian Youth Camp for the past five years and am currently serving in my second year as a member of the Board. SCYC has been especially meaningful to my family, as my wife grew up attending camp and our children have also had the opportunity to grow up going there. I am grateful to now serve in a role that helps continue its impact on young lives.

My wife, Sherri, and I have been married for 23 years, and we are blessed with three children—Riley, Wyatt, and Mia. I teach 3rd–5th grade physical education in Fort Oglethorpe, and I truly enjoy the opportunity to work with young people each day. Over the past 15–20 years, I have served in various capacities at the Rossville Church of Christ. Although I grew up in Alabama, I have called Georgia home for the past 25 years.

SCYC is important to me because it provides young people with the opportunity to grow closer to Christ through biblical teaching, fellowship, and meaningful experiences. It is a blessing to see the impact camp has on each generation, including my own family. I am thankful for the opportunity to be part of the work at Skyline Christian Youth Camp and the role it plays in strengthening faith and building lasting relationships.
